They say having your number will help them deliver product suggestions from companies "you already work with" versus one you're not familiar with. How your phone number makes this possible isn't exactly clear.

If bothered by that potential privacy issue, users have 30 days from agreeing to the terms to stop Facebook grabbing the data. According to the privacy policy, that's possible by going to Settings > Account, though your reporter hadn't yet been offered the new terms and so could not change the settings.

Unsurprisingly, the data sharing is happening so Facebook can better target ads and improve "products experiences," mostly by determining who your friends are and what content you like (it's unclear how just a phone number and usage statistics will help with that, but every bit of metadata helps companies create a more accurate picture of you). The policy says the update will also help the platforms counter spam and abuse.

The privacy policy of WhatsApp has been updated to start sharing your phone number as well as other account information with Facebook. The messaging app says the data sharing will improve your Facebook ads and product experiences.

WhatsApp and Facebook claim that sharing your phone number will help Facebook improve your experience by offering more relevant ad content, making better friend suggestions and more. While this may be true, it may also lead to businesses getting a hold of your phone number. At some point you will open up WhatsApp and be presented with the new Terms & Conditions (it may not come up the next time you open it, it might have to update, then it will pop up the next time). Once you accept you will have 30 days to opt out of it sharing your phone number. To opt out, follow these steps:

WhatsApp will soon start sharing some of your data with Facebook. This will allow Facebook to show you more targeted ads. You will not see ads on WhatsApp, but you could definitely start seeing Facebook friend suggestions and ads based on your data from WhatsApp. If this makes you uncomfortable and you don't want Facebook to see your WhatsApp data, you need to manually disable the setting on the messaging app. Here's how to stop WhatsApp from sharing your data with Facebook.

Marc Rotenberg, president of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, told The New York Times that his privacy advocacy group will file a complaint on Monday with the Federal Trade Commission to stop WhatsApp from sharing users' data with Facebook.

The first and most important tip is to remove your phone number from your Instagram account. When you create an account, you're asked to insert a phone number as a means to add contacts from your phone on Instagram. By removing your phone number from your Instagram account, you stop your account from appearing in the Find Friends section, under Contacts. However, before you can remove your phone number from Instagram, you must 1) have a verified email attached to your account and 2) not have two-factor authentication enabled.

If you want to remove your Instagram profile from appearing under Follow Facebook Friends on other people's Instagram accounts, you must go to your Instagram profile, tap on the three-dash menu, hit "Settings," tap on "Account," and finally on "Linked Accounts." Under Linked Accounts you'll see a number of accounts, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. Tap on "Facebook" and hit "Unlink Account" to remove your Facebook account from Instagram. You will no longer show up under the Follow Facebook Friends setting on Instagram in anyone's phone that may have you added on Facebook.
