Inshallah, Football: A Documentary on Kashmir's Passion for Soccer

Inshallah, Football is a documentary film by Ashvin Kumar that tells the story of Basharat Baba, a young Kashmiri boy who dreams of becoming a professional soccer player. However, his aspirations are hindered by the political turmoil and violence in his homeland, as well as by the fact that he is the son of a former militant who fought against the Indian army in the 1990s.

The film follows Basharat's journey as he trains under Juan Marcos Troia, an Argentinean coach who runs a football academy in Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir. Marcos hopes to send his best players to Brazil, where they can learn from the legendary club Santos FC, where Pele played. Basharat is one of the chosen few, but he faces a major obstacle: he is denied a passport by the Indian government because of his father's past.

The film also explores the lives and perspectives of Basharat's father, Bashir Baba, who has renounced violence and now runs a bakery; Marcos and his Brazilian wife, who have moved to Kashmir with their three daughters to pursue their passion for soccer; and other young Kashmiris who share Basharat's love for the game.

Inshallah, Football is a film that captures the irony of Kashmir's physical beauty and its tragic history; the hope and joy of youth and the despair and fear of war; and the power and potential of soccer as a tool for social change and personal growth.

The film was completed in 2010 and has won several awards at international film festivals, such as the Special Mention at the Dubai International Film Festival and the Asian Network of Documentary Fund at the Pusan Film Festival. However, it has faced difficulties getting released in India due to censorship issues. The film was banned by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for containing sensitive footage and dialogues that could incite violence or disturb public order. The ban was later lifted after Kumar appealed to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), but with several cuts and disclaimers.

Inshallah, Football is a film that challenges the stereotypes and prejudices about Kashmir and its people; it shows that they are not just victims or terrorists, but human beings with dreams and passions. It also shows that soccer is not just a sport, but a way of life and a source of inspiration for many Kashmiris.
