The film was released on May 23, 2001 and received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. The film was praised for its music composed by R.P. Patnaik and its cinematography by Hari Anumolu, but criticized for its weak story, screenplay, and direction. The film was a commercial failure at the box office, collecting only 1 crore against a budget of 10 crores. The film was later dubbed into Hindi as Aaj Ka Romeo and into Tamil as Unnai Ninaithu Naan.

Plot

The film revolves around the love story of Venu and Siri, who belong to two rival families of sweet shop owners in Hyderabad. Venu is the grandson of Siva Reddy (K. Viswanath), who runs Siva Reddy Sweets, while Siri is the granddaughter of Sahadeva Reddy (Kaikala Satyanarayana), who runs Sahadeva Reddy Sweets. Venu falls in love with Siri at first sight when he sees her on the day of Holi. He gets hold of her photograph and puts up a hoarding in Abids area asking her to call him.

Siri, who feels neglected by her parents, is impressed by Venu's gesture and calls him. They start talking on the phone and soon develop feelings for each other. However, their families are unaware of their relationship and are busy preparing for the upcoming elections. Siva Reddy and Sahadeva Reddy are given MLA tickets from two opposition parties and are determined to win the election by any means.

Venu and Siri decide to meet each other secretly, but their plans are foiled by their respective family members and friends. They also face trouble from a local goon named Bachi (Sivaji Raja), who has a crush on Siri and wants to marry her by force. Venu and Siri manage to escape from Bachi's clutches several times with the help of their friends.

Venu's uncle (M.S. Narayana) advises him to elope with Siri to Shimla, where he has a friend who can help them get married. Venu agrees and packs his bags to leave for Shimla with his uncle. However, he does not inform Siri about his plan and leaves a note for her at her house.

Siri's parents find out about her affair with Venu and try to arrange her marriage with another boy. Siri refuses to marry anyone else and runs away from her house in search of Venu. She reaches Shimla after facing many difficulties on the way.

In Shimla, Venu and Siri finally meet each other and express their love. They decide to get married at a temple with the help of Venu's uncle's friend (Maharshi Raghava). However, Bachi follows them to Shimla and tries to stop their wedding. He kidnaps Siri and threatens to kill her if Venu does not leave her alone.

Venu fights with Bachi and his men and rescues Siri from his clutches. He then takes her to the temple where they get married in front of God.

Meanwhile, Siva Reddy and Sahadeva Reddy lose the election due to their involvement in corruption and violence. They realize their mistake and decide to end their rivalry for the sake of their grandchildren's happiness. They reach Shimla along with their family members and bless Venu and Siri for their marriage.

The film ends with Venu and Siri returning to Hyderabad and opening a new sweet shop named Ninnu Choodalani Sweets, which becomes a huge success.

Critical reception

The film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences upon its release. The film was praised for its music and cinematography, but criticized for its weak story, screenplay, and direction. The film was also compared unfavorably with the previous films of N.T. Rama Rao Jr., such as Student No.1 and Subbu, which were more successful at the box office.

The Hindu wrote, "Ninnu Choodalani is a routine love story with nothing new to offer. The director has failed to infuse any freshness into the plot or the narration. The film suffers from a weak script, poor characterisation, and lack of logic. The comedy track is also dull and boring. The only saving grace of the film is its music by R.P. Patnaik and the cinematography by Hari Anumolu."

Idlebrain.com gave the film a rating of 2 out of 5 and stated, "Ninnu Choodalani is a disappointment for the fans of NTR Jr., who expected a lot from him after his impressive debut in Student No.1. The film lacks the basic elements of a good love story, such as emotion, romance, and conflict. The film is also too long and slow-paced. The director has wasted the talent of NTR Jr., who has tried his best to carry the film on his shoulders with his energetic performance and dances. The heroine Raveena Rajput is a big letdown with her poor acting and dubbing skills. The only positive aspects of the film are its music and cinematography."

Trivia

Raveena Rajput is the daughter of the producer K.L. Narayana, who has produced several hit films like Santosham, Dookudu, and Srimanthudu.

  • The film was initially titled as Preminche Oka Maikam, but was later changed to Ninnu Choodalani, which is a line from the song "Nee Sneham Ika Raadu Ani" from the film.

  • The film faced controversy for its hoarding scene, where Venu puts up a huge poster of Siri's photograph in Abids area and asks her to call him. The scene was criticized by some people for being vulgar and offensive to women's dignity. The director defended the scene by saying that it was done in a humorous way and that it was inspired by a real-life incident that happened in Hyderabad.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Ninnu Choodalani is a mediocre love story that fails to impress the viewers with its clichéd plot, weak direction, and poor execution. The film wastes the potential of N.T. Rama Rao Jr., who shows his talent and charisma in his debut role. The only redeeming features of the film are its melodious music and beautiful cinematography. The film is not worth watching unless you are a die-hard fan of NTR Jr.
